The ultimate adventure in Iceland:
Do you prefer outdoor education? Are you the adventurous type? Would you like to hike in the rugged Icelandic wilderness one week, battle white-water rivers the next and climb glaciers with the northern lights as your backdrop the third, all while earning both outdoor skills and university credits?
Just think this could be your classroom...
Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Canada in cooperation with Keilir offer an international university programme (Adventure Sport Certificate) in adventure studies in Iceland. The programme is an introduction to outdoor activities and the adventure industry with extensive time on field activity courses all around Iceland as well as compressed and modularised classroom course instruction. This is the ideal program for entry-level adventure students and students wishing to explore their career interest in adventure-related fields.
The Adventure Sport Certificate is a 30 ECTS credit (eight-month) intensive education building on local and international expertise within the field and using the unique and accessible natural environment in Iceland as a practical classroom. During the studies you will be able to take active part in outdoor activities such as hiking, ice climbing, glacier walks, mountaineering, river rafting, sea kayaking, white water kayaking and plenty more practical training in locations around the country.
The programme starts in late August and with graduation in May you have the opportunity to extend your stay in Iceland working as a guide for one our partnering adventure tour operators over the summer period. Adventure tourism is a growing industry not only in Iceland but all over the world, so job opportunities for skilled adventure guides are plentiful.
The Adventure Sport Certificate is also a gateway into further studies within the profession. Graduates from the programme in Iceland can apply for Adventure Sport Diploma at TRU in Canada, to broaden and enhance skills within specific focus areas. With this path you could graduate with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from TRU, with the first year completed in Iceland.
