For decades Music has been the soundtrack to Liverpool life, and with Liverpool recently being named as the UNESCO City of Music, it is a very exciting time to be a Musician, living and studying within the City. Our department of Music is well connected with the Liverpool Music scene. Our team of academic staff boast a number of internationally known musicians, actively engaged in groundbreaking research and outputs.
Based in newly refurbished surroundings that offer great facilities, we have a vibrant community of performers, historians, composers, theorists and industry specialists.
Together they are responsible for a prodigious creative output, from groundbreaking research papers to compelling productions and compositions. These ensure our voice is heard locally and internationally.
Master's Degrees in Music
Our taught Master's degree programmes provide exciting opportunities to perfect your playing or increase your appreciation of how music is created, performed, produced, managed or marketed.
Our unique structure and breadth of expertise allow students to cross the traditional divides of musical genre. You can also tailor your programme with modules such as:

• music history
• music & film
• music industry studies
• music and the city
• music and heritage.
For your final dissertation you are free to research novel topics, under the friendly supervision of experts in fields as diverse as analysis, emotion and metaphor; music, memory and heritage; music and interactive media.
Studying for a PhD in Music
At Liverpool, you can pursue your doctoral studies under the guidance of experts in many fields of music and with many research interests - from composition, performance and analysis to technology and industry management.
We are able to accommodate many thesis proposals, including novel cross-disciplinary topics requiring dual supervision by experts in other disciplines. In this respect, the University has over 1,400 subject specialists from which to choose.
The University's Graduate school provides training in transferable skills such as research, presentation, networking and publishing. There is an award-winning careers service, as well as a full calendar of postgraduate events.
