Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education

What is the main aim of the College?

The Al-Maktoum College of Higher Education was founded in 2001 to bridge the possible gap between the Muslim and western worlds by focusing on intelligent debate and scientific understanding of Islam and the role of Muslims in the contemporary world.   In its relatively short history, a total of 150 students from over 30 countries have successfully graduated from the College’s postgraduate degree programmes, mainly PhDs. The College has recently widened its scope as a Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Centre, and has ambitions to grow its activities.   At the College we provide quality education for the coming generations of scholars, both nationally and internationally, in the Study of Islam and Muslims.

Can you describe the College and reflect on its history?

We are regarded as a centre of excellence in the UK for teaching and research. At the heart of our approach is improving understanding of and working with other religions and ethno-religious communities. We embrace ‘multiculturalism’ and ‘religious pluralism’ in the sense that we value equally all human beings regardless of their religion, ethnicity, nationality, gender, class, disability and cultural background. We are a place for critical reflection on the issues facing a diverse and multicultural world in the 21st century. It is extremely gratifying when students tell us their studies are stimulating, dynamic and contemporary.

Can you outline the programmes currently offered?

The College offers a range of six, full-time programmes – SCQF-credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). The programmes available are:

• Professional Diploma in Islamic Economics and Finance
• Advanced Diploma in Islamic Studies
• Advanced Diploma in Arabic Language
• Diploma in Arabic Language
• Certificates in Arabic Language
• Introductory Certificate in Arabic Language.

We are looking at ways to extend the number of courses available, and to boosting the numbers who study with us. We also intend to re-introduce post-graduate courses in the near future.

What kind of learning experience can students expect?

We provide a place of learning for everyone – for people of all backgrounds, all religions and none, locally, nationally and internationally. As the College is relatively small this allows for intense academic training in a friendly atmosphere. Our students form a lively and friendly community inside and outside the classroom while our excellent facilities help foster successful studies.

What types of jobs can graduates aspire to?

We believe that a qualification from the Al-Maktoum College is the gateway to a diverse range of opportunities for students: in government services at local and national levels; as diplomats, consultants and project workers; in non-governmental and international organisations; the voluntary sector and social and charitable bodies as well as careers in education. Many also go on to further study either at the College itself or at universities.

What is Dundee like as a place to study and live?

Dundee has a quite stunning setting on the Firth of Tay. It is a multicultural city with two universities and is currently undergoing exciting changes, especially on its riverfront including the new Victoria and Albert Design Museum. Students can enjoy its multicultural diversity, friendliness, sunshine and affordable accommodation costs. The College has vibrant ties with many local, national and international communities that our students can access.

Information is available on how to apply, study requirements and available bursaries.
