La Trobe University is a multi-campus university in Victoria, Australia. Since 2003, the university have consistently ranked among the top 500 universities in the world. The Graduate Guide gives you a taste of education down under.

How do Postgraduate students go about applying to study at your University? Is it similar to here in the UK?

Applying for Postgraduate studies at La Trobe University is quick and easy.  You can choose to apply on-line, or you may choose to use the services of one of our representatives in the UK.  You would simply need to ensure you have evidence of your previous studies in the form of official transcripts to lodge your application.

What is campus life like for students?

I think one of the best things about studying at La Trobe is the vibrant and lively campus atmosphere. You will become part of this exciting community when studying at La Trobe and can choose to become involved in the wide range of extracurricular activities - on and off campus. The campus “feel” is completed with retail outlets and services and many Restaurants and cafés on campus providing a wide range of world foods.

Which courses are the most popular?

La Trobe University offers a broad range of Postgraduate programs across a range of discipline areas. Our teaching is informed by our strengths in research.  We are nationally and internationally recognised for outstanding research in fields such as biochemistry, cell biology, physics, human movement, human communication, Health and Society, and sports science.  Coursework and Research postgraduate programs are available in related fields. La Trobe University offers generous scholarships to high-achieving students from all countries and details are available on the University’s website.

Are the semesters the same as in the UK?

The academic year in Australia is primarily split into two semesters with the first starting in late February early March and ending in June, and the second semester starting towards the end of July, and finishing in November each year.  Our summer vacation covers December through most of February and many students take this opportunity to either take on full time employment, or travel throughout Australia and to our closest neighbours in Asia and the Pacific.

Does the university provide a wide range of accommodation?

La Trobe University offers numerous accommodation options, including on-campus accommodation at the Melbourne, Albury-Wodonga and Bendigo campuses.  Most on-campus options provide you with a single study bedroom with access to shared kitchen, lounge and bathroom facilities.  There are also options for couples, or students thinking of bringing family with them to Australia.  I would encourage any student to thoroughly research their options before arriving into Australia.

Why do you think students should choose your university over others in the world?

At La Trobe, we aim to produce well-rounded graduates with the theoretical and practical insights to make meaningful contributions in their chosen fields. The facilities and services on campus support this goal, and our alumni tell us that their experience at La Trobe and the friendly open-door approach of their lecturers and tutors has changed their lives forever.

How are students helped in terms of being prepared for life after their Postgraduate studies?

At the end of each semester completing students are invited to attend a workshop to prepare for their NEXT STEPS on completion of studies. Special emphasis is placed on careers and how to maximise your La Trobe University qualification and make the most of future opportunities whether returning home, remaining in Australia or moving to another destination.
