Clare Deal spent six months teaching in Vanuatu, a collection of more than 80 islands in the South Pacific Island. Clare had spent years researching volunteer providers and chose Lattitude Global Volunteering as ‘they offered the chance to completely immerse myself and to make a real difference’. Clare recalls a huge morale boost that she felt after just a couple of months of teaching.
One of the amazing islands of Vanuatu
"As I was talking to the mother, two timid little boys emerged from behind her, one of which was Watson and one was his little brother. ‘Ca Va?’ I asked, a kick in the shins from his older brother nudged this little shoeless child who had never stepped foot inside a classroom to gaze up at me, his round, hazelnut eyes fixing on mine as he replied ‘Ca Va bien Merci’ another nudging kick from Watson and he remembered his French manners – ‘et vous?’. It was like my whole insides were alight! I was beaming for at least a week after!"

About Lattitude Global Volunteering
Lattitude Global Volunteering is a youth development charity that specialises in overseas volunteering placements. Since 1972, Lattitude Global Volunteering has sent over 40,000 young people to volunteer in over 17 countries around the world. Our volunteers have had the opportunity to work in areas as diverse as conservation, medical work, outdoor sports, community projects and teaching, with placements lasting from 10 weeks to 12 months.
Lattitude Global Volunteering helps young people from developed and developing countries to volunteer. We make sure our placements deliver sustainable value for the children, communities and institutions that volunteers work in. We match every volunteer to a placement that really needs their skills and where they can have the most benefit as part of a larger, on-going programme.
You skills can make a difference in a range of institutions
Lattitude Global Volunteering is also now part of the International Citizen Service (ICS), one of the world’s largest overseas volunteering programmes funded by the UK government. ICS Lattitude Global Volunteering offers 10 week placements to work in Ghana, Malawi or South Africa. One of the unique aspects of ICS is that volunteers work alongside in-country volunteers who are from the host country as equal partners. This cross-cultural learning is a key aspect of the programme and is an element of the ICS programme that volunteers really value.
Volunteering with Lattitude Global Volunteering is a fun and rewarding experience
In addition to youth development, the emphasis of ICS is to raise awareness of global issues and address major international developmental concerns. In order to make ICS as inclusive as possible, all of the ICS volunteers’ costs will be paid for by the government, including flights, visas, vaccinations, food and accommodation. The programme is available to anyone aged 18-25 who is an EEA citizen and who has had residence in the UK for at least 12 months.
For those aged 23 and over, there is also the opportunity to volunteer as a team leader for six months where you will lead a team of volunteers and have the chance to make a significant impact on the project you’re involved with as-well-as your own personal development.
