The University of Exeter: Profile

Making the exceptional happen

The University of Exeter was given its charter in 1955, but has educational roots stretching back more than 150 years. Today we are one of the top 100 universities in the world, a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities, and we consistently rank in the top 10 of all major UK higher education league tables. We combine academic excellence and world-leading research with stunning campuses in the most beautiful part of the UK.

Our colleges and campuses

Our six academic colleges cover every aspect of the sciences, humanities, social sciences, business, and medicine, and we offer more than 100 taught master’s programmes as well as research degrees in every subject area. Our four campuses – two each in Exeter and Cornwall – cover nearly 500 acres and are regularly recognised as the most beautiful in the country.

Over the last decade, we have invested heavily in our facilities – from study spaces and laboratories to student accommodation and sports facilities – making our campuses as cutting-edge as they are beautiful, and perfectly suited to postgraduate study.

Our research

The University is a vibrant centre for new ideas, and our research makes a difference around the world. We have a high proportion of early career researchers, and a strong emphasis on postgraduate research students, supported by our Doctoral College. We have won the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for our research three times and saw outstanding results at the REF 2014 performance, where 98% of our research was classed as being of international quality; we were subsequently awarded the third highest funding increase of all UK universities from HEFCE.

Our students

Our students are amongst the most satisfied in the UK; we’ve consistently finished in the upper rankings of the National Student Survey, and our award-winning Students’ Guild regularly achieves exceptionally high levels of student participation, from societies and sports to student elections and community volunteering. Our students come from every type of background and from all over the world; in 2014 and 2015 we received awards for providing the best international student experience in the UK.

We believe that higher education has the power to transform people’s lives, via the benefits of studying and through the impact of research. Our students demand a great deal of us and we of them – we aim to make our teaching and research inspirational and their learning experience exceptional.

Our campuses have the space for you to reach your potential
