The Institute of Acoustics

Acoustics is the interdisciplinary science that deals with the study of all mechanical waves in gases, liquids, and solids including vibration, sound, ultrasound and infrasound.

Many people mistakenly think that acoustics is strictly musical or architectural in nature. While acoustics does include the study of musical instruments and architectural spaces, it also covers a vast range of topics, including noise control, SONAR for submarine navigation, ultrasounds for medical imaging, thermoacoustic refrigeration, seismology, bioacoustics and electroacoustic communication.

Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control

Over the years the course has become well established as providing high-level training in real-world practical acoustics.

Certificate Course in Building Acoustics Measurements

This five-day course is at an accredited centre. Usually, attendance at the centre is required for the four days preceding the examination and on the examination day which includes a practical...

Certificate Course in the Management of Occupational Exposure to Hand Arm Vibration

This five-day course seeks to enable course delegates to meet their legal duties under relevant health and safety law, in accordance with current guidance from the Health and Safety Executive. After completing the course delegates should be able to explain the requirements of current legislation...

Certificate of Competence Workplace Noise Risk Assessment

This Certificate course aims to provide a recognised course of education and training to enable persons to carry out workplace noise assessments in a competent manner, as required by the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005.

Certificate of Competence Environmental Noise Measurement

This five-day course seeks to provide awareness of the significance of measurement data against the framework of standards and legislation for environmental noise.

Environmental travel for acoustics

Although it is possible to start with degrees in music technology or environmental science, you will usually have to take a further course to acquire the skills required by the acoustic industry. The Institute of Acoustics’ Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control is the leading specialist qualification for the professional practitioner in acoustics. It is also possible to study for individual modules of the Diploma, and the successful completion of the Diploma is recognised by three academic establishments (London South Bank University, the University of Derby and Southampton Solent University) as being the equivalent to the first year of their acoustically-related MSc courses.

Our study centres span Scotland, Leeds, London, Southampton and Ireland, each centre has their own enrollment dates and our education team can assist you with bookings.
