Study your MRes Programme in Medical Sciences at Newcastle University

An MRes is a master's level degree in research. It is designed for graduates with a BSc in the life sciences or a related discipline, intercalating and fully qualified MBBS or BDS students and ideal for students who are looking to prepare for PhD studies.

This exciting one-year full-time programme provides broad-based training in contemporary biosciences and medical sciences. It’s a great springboard into a career that involves a working knowledge of scientific research in academia and industry.

Programme elements include professional and key research skills, training in a 24-week research project and three taught modules that you can self-select from over 30 leading and cutting-edge topics.

Newcastle is a world-class university with a thriving international student community made up of students from over 120 countries across the world. We are a member of the Russell Group that comprises the 24 research-intensive UK universities and ranked within the top 150 of universities in the world (QS World University Rankings 2019).

Newcastle University is one of the UK’s major international universities and has an outstanding record for quality in both teaching and research. We are ranked 8th in the UK for Medical and Life Sciences research quality (REF 2014). A major strength is that the research is fully integrated with clinical medical disciplines. Newcastle Biomedicine also interacts extensively with the National Health Service. Our state-of-the-art facilities include bioinformatics, bio-imaging, flow cytometry, high throughput screening, proteomics and magnetic resonance imaging.

Since the MRes is faculty-wide, it allows you to experience a variety of internationally competitive research areas predominantly in academia but potentially in industry.

A recent MRes student, Navin, who completed an Ageing and Health MRes said:

‘As a postgraduate, you get a lot more freedom but it also comes with its own share of responsibility. You have really good peers around you which encourages you to set expectations high. Concepts were clear and enriching, whenever I hit a roadblock and confusion, the staff were there to aid me. I aim to study Ageing at PhD level so having studied an MRes specific to that topic will allow me to have a very relevant resume.’
